How to Extract a RAR File on Windows 11
Windows 11's built-in RAR support covers more than a basic double-click, from full extraction to pulling out individual files.

Dragging files out of the archive view
Double-clicking a RAR file opens it as a browsable view without a full extraction. From there, you can drag individual files or folders directly into another Explorer window, which extracts only what you select rather than the whole archive.
Choosing a destination
- Extracting into a new subfolder (the default) keeps the archive's contents separate from anything already in the current folder.
- Extracting directly into an existing folder can overwrite files with the same name, so check for conflicts first.
- For large archives, extract to a drive with enough free space; Explorer does not always warn clearly if space runs low mid-extraction.
Long-path issues
If an archive contains deeply nested folders or long file names, extraction can fail with a path-length error. Extracting closer to a drive root (for example C:\extract\ instead of several folders deep) shortens the resulting path and often resolves it.
Multi-part archives
A RAR split into .part1.rar, .part2.rar, and so on must have all parts in the same folder. Extract from the first part (.part1.rar); Windows 11's built-in support and most extractors will pull in the rest automatically. See multi-part RAR files for details.
Verifying the result

Can I extract just one file from a RAR archive without extracting everything?
Yes. Double-click the RAR to browse its contents, then drag the specific file or folder you need into another window.
Why does extraction fail with a path-too-long error?
Some file systems and tools limit total path length. Extract to a shorter path, such as a folder near the drive root, to avoid the limit.
Do I need all parts of a multi-part RAR archive to extract it?
