How to Open a RAR File
Opening a RAR file usually means extracting its contents first. Here is the fastest way to do that on each major platform.
A .rar file is a compressed container, not something you read directly the way you'd open a text document. "Opening" a RAR file almost always means one of two things: viewing what's inside without pulling the files out, or extracting the contents so you can use them normally. Most people actually want to extract.

Opening RAR files with WinRAR
WinRAR is the publisher's own tool and handles every RAR feature, including recovery records and encrypted file names. After installing it, double-clicking a .rar file opens the archive window, and the right-click menu gains "Extract Here" and "Extract to <folder>" entries.
